Gallery on the Green in Canton recently hosted the gala opening and awards ceremony for its 48th Annual Open Juried Exhibition.  Artists from Connecticut and beyond submitted fine art for a juried evaluation by Benjamin Colman,  Assistant Curator at the Florence Griswold Museum.

Colman noted that works submitted displayed remarkable depth of talent and breadth of artistic practice.  And that these works offer a vibrant portrait of a rich artistic community that is both appreciative of its past, and eagerly engaged with the direction of its future.  He noted that the works included glazed paintings of pastoral scenes that continue Connecticut’s century-old history of plein air landscape painting, a substantial group rooted in the virtuosic tradition of studio craft including clay and glass, along with photographs, collages, diverse types of prints, mixed media assemblages and digitally manipulated images.

Prizes were awarded to Diane Marinaro, John Johnson, Gay Schempp, Julie Anne Palmer, Hennie Stargardter, Harvey Offenhartz, Sharon Porpiglia, Susan Hackett, Jon Eastman, Suzan Fox, Faripour Forouhar, Deborah Sacks, Genti Bushi, and Eric Hedberg.

Award prizes in support of the arts were generously provided by Union Savings Bank, Collinsville Savings Society, Mitchell Auto Group/David Tefft, Maxwell Shepherd Memorial Arts Fund, Inc., Gregory Erisoty, A & J Quality Roofing, LLC., Jerry’s Artarama CT, Smith Edwards McCoy Architects/Kenton McCoy, object|resonance/Mark G Snyder, Bridge Street Live, Bill and Penny Doyle fund a memorial fund in memory of Peg Douglass,  and a photography award is given in memory of  Charles and Doris Currier by an anonymous donor, as well as two endowed funds: the Nancy Cloutier Memorial Prize and the Mitchell Manchester Memorial Prize and a Juror’s Best in Show award from Shirley Mae Neu and Mark Snyder, members of the GOG Board.

From now through Saturday Nov. 14, there is a unique opportunity to view and purchase prize winning fine art from over a dozen artists along with an additional 40 pieces personally selected by the juror as the best of the submitted fine art.

At the same time in an adjoining gallery space, Lori Racicot-Burrous’ solo show, “Driven to Abstraction”, is showcasing her new landscape and barn paintings. These range from realistic renderings to conceptual and abstract works inspired by familiar subjects.  Lori is a 2015 Farmington Valley Arts Center’s Artist in Residence and she teaches painting classes and workshops. Her work appeared in the June/July 2015 issue of Somerset Studio – The Art of Paper and Mixed-Media magazine, and one of her paintings was chosen as the image for the 2015 Connecticut Historic Gardens Day poster.

With 2 floors of gallery exhibition space, there is always an abundance of fine art on display at the Gallery on the Green.  The Canton Artists’ Guild at the Gallery on the Green is the longest continuously-running artist guild in the state, has 3 separate galleries and hosts 9 month-long exhibitions each year.  The gallery is located near the intersection of Dowd Avenue and Route 44 at 5 Canton Green Road in Canton.  Hours are Friday – Sunday, 1-5 pm or by appointment.  The main floor gallery is handicapped accessible. Admission is free .
