Farmington Valley Stage Offers Theater Workshops for Children

December 21, 2015 Arts and Entertainment No Comments

FVStage workshop 3-8Submitted Release

The Farmington Valley Stage Company, a non-profit theater located in Collinsville, is offering theater workshops for children in grades 3-8.  This is a first for the Stage Company, which is now in its 4th season.

“We’ve been talking about doing this for awhile,” stated Artistic Director, Doreen Cohn, “and we feel that the time is right.”  Doreen retired from the Avon Public Schools where she taught theater in grades K-12.  She still coordinates the popular Avon Summer Theater Programs.

“Many parents have expressed an interest in theater classes for their children during the school year,” she added. “We are hoping to fill that need.”

Although most of the local schools provide activities for their students to participate in theater productions, not many, especially in the lower grades, provide non-performance based opportunities.  Participation in plays is important, however, when the focus is on the production there isn’t much time for the exploration or development of skills. The company’s goal is to introduce children to theater, cultivate individual talents, and afford those with varied experience the opportunity for continued growth and personal challenge.

The workshops are designed to motivate and inspire the students through participation in a wide range of activities, including speech, creative movement, improvisation and scene study.

It has been proven that theater is “more than a frill.” Theater teaches verbal and non-verbal communication skills so important to success in any field of endeavor, as well as stimulates creativity, teaches problem solving, develops self –discipline, builds confidence, and most important, foster a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

The workshops consist of four, 90-minute sessions (Jan. 9, 16, 23, 30) from 10:30-12 for students in grades 3-5, and 1-2:30 for students in grades 6-8.  Cost for all 4 sessions is $125.

All workshops are in the Canton Town Hall Auditorium, 4 Market Street, Collinsville, CT

The Farmington Valley Stage Company is a non-profit theater company located in the Canton Town Hall in the center of Collinsville.  Since 2012 the company has produced over a dozen productions from comedies and dramas to musical revues.  Our goals are to provide local audiences with quality, affordable live theater experiences, as well as to provide opportunities for anyone with interest in the theater to participate both on stage and/or behind the scenes.  For more information on the workshop, the instructors, the theater company and to register, please see our website www.fvstage.org.
