Nodine’s Smokehouse to Open Deli, Restaurant in Canton

CANTON – A Litchfield County family known for its smoked meats is opening a deli and restaurant in Canton.

Owners of Nodine’s Smokehouse are currently working at 192 Albany Turnpike, with plans to open a retail store, deli and restaurant later this Spring.

“We’re looking forward to it,” said Calvin Nodine. “We’ve been wanting to do it for years and figure this is the right time to try it.”

For the business, Nodine has partnered with his stepson Jeremy Archer, a local chef and owner of “Amigo, The Friendly Hot Sauce.”

In Canton, Nodine’s plans to offer lunch and dinner with pizza, deli sandwiches, smoked meats and other menu items. Many – but not all – offerings will showcase Nodine’s own Torrington-made products.

Several others, such as Pizza, sauces and bread, will be made right on site. Meat will also be ground on site and Nodine’s will also cook its roast beef right in Canton.

In the next several weeks, Nodine will work on a host interior and exterior improvements to the location, formerly home to Momma Mia’s, Smokin’ Spokes, The Hub, Chef Elizabeth’s and others. Notable will be new natural looking white pine tongue and groove siding.

Nodine also plans to add some vintage decorations to the place include a circa 1800s Glenwood stove.

Nodine’s got its start circa 1969.

At their home in Goshen, Nodine’s father and mother, Ronald and Johanne were neighbors with Elmer Bloomfield, who would smoke meats from the Nodine’s animals. When Ronald Nodine, who had worked as an engineer, looked to get into the business, Bloomfield offered his customer list for $100 and agreed to show the family the ropes.

“About two weeks before we got the plant ready, Elmer passed away,” Calvin Nodine said.

Not to be deterred, the family hired a meat cutter and Ronald audited some course at the University of Connecticut.

“That was it; we were on our way,” Calvin Nodine said. “A lot of trial and error – very interesting errors. Some of the errors came out very good.”

While Nodine is exploring the idea of expanding to Louisiana and Colorado, the more immediate goal has been to establish another area location. Canton offered a small-town feel but high-traffic area, he said. Recently Momma Mia’s closed its doors after a very short time in Canton.

“Then this place came up,” said Calvin Nodine, who is leasing the building.

Nodine said a lot will depend on the rate of progress but he hopes to open by the end of April or beginning of May. Details such as exact hours are a work in progress but the plan is to open 7 days a week and offer lunch and dinner in addition to selling the company’s Torrington-produced products such as jams, smoked meats, poultry, fish and cheese.
