COLLINSVILLE – For the owners of The Underground Gallery, featuring Connecticut-based artists is a way to showcase local talent, bring in visitors and foster artistic ventures.

From 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 18, the gallery hosts the first of its 2016 “Meet the Artist” receptions with Jessica Fallis, a Southington painter who loves to “explore nuances of water and reflections, along with the fragmentations and abstractions that occur in the natural world.”

The gallery, which opened in July of 2014, has stayed true to its original mission.

“We want this to be an opportunity for Connecticut artists to showcase their work,” said gallery manager Lisa Sharp.

The Underground Gallery features three distinct exhibit areas. Artists will display for three weeks on a rotating basis, with an opening each Friday night.

The receptions not only provide a chance for people to meet the artists and learn about the creative process, but are also good for Collinsville as a whole, said gallery owner Tom Kutz.

“We want them to be fairly close so they can bring their following here to Collinsville,” he said. “The locals seem to like it as well. They check in on Friday night to see what the art is.”

Upcoming receptions include:

  • March 25 – Richard Schlicher
  • April 1 – Ben Dworski-Riggs
  • April 8 – Zeb Mayer
  • April 15 – Sally Sargent Markey
  • April 22 – April Aldighieri
  • April 29 – William Kluba
  • May 6 – Ron Crowcroft
  • May 13 – Robert Scutt

Additionally, The Underground Gallery is in the process of interviewing other artists interested in displaying their work.

The gallery also carries books, note cards, home furnishings, limited edition prints, folk art, pottery, paintings and other handcrafted items from local artisans.

Hours are 6 to 9 p.m. on Fridays and 11 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The gallery is located in the Lower level of 122 Main St., under Creative Kitchen and Bath. It is at the corner of Main and Market Streets, with a side entrance on Market.

Sharp and Kutz only hope that even more visitors will take the time to discover all Collinsville has to offer.

“Venture down the stairs,” Sharp said. “You’ll be pleasantly surprised.”
