Spreciousubmitted Release

Each year Dog Star Rescue, a Central Connecticut-based dog rescue organization, hosts Bark & Brew as its primary fundraising event, with every dime going towards rescuing dogs and finding them the forever homes they deserve. Each ticket includes award-winning Dog Star Rescue barbecue, unlimited craft beer samples, a raffle and silent auction, live music from the band Crossroads, and a puppy kissing booth where adoptable puppies will be ready to offer up slobbery kisses to attendees.

“For a small $30 donation, enjoy bottomless glasses of Hooker Beer samples, a souvenir Dog Star Rescue pint glass, all along with award-winning barbecue and great music. See you there!” Dan McCabe, Dog Star Rescue founder, said.

Curt Cameron, owner of the Thomas Hooker Brewing Company, has adopted two dogs from McCabe and has happily agreed to host Bark & Brew again this year in support of Dog Star Rescue’s goals.

Founded in March 2014, Dog Star Rescue is a licensed nonprofit organization that rescues strays and abandoned dogs from high-kill shelters and takes in owner-surrenders. To date, about 800 dogs have been rescued and adopted out through online applications and Dog Star Rescue adoption events held twice monthly in the Farmington Valley, West Hartford and surrounding towns.

As a volunteer-based organization, all adoption fees and donations, including proceeds from Bark & Brew, go towards saving dogs. Typical expenses range from veterinary costs like vaccines and surgeries, to transportation and supplies. Last year 340 people attended Bark & Brew, raising $12,000 for the organization.

barkbrewflyer“The proceeds of the fun fundraiser were primarily used to buy an enclosed trailer for use at adoption events and to transport  food, crates, toys and other dog related items to fosters and local shelters which significantly increased the number of dogs saved in 2016”, McCabe stated.

In addition to aiding in the rescue of dogs, volunteers build dog beds for other shelters in need, participate in community talks, train the public in bite prevention, attend charity events, and assist area animal control officers.

“Dog Star Rescue was born from a great group of experienced rescue volunteers with a community-based vision to guide unwanted, homeless dogs to a new happy life in wonderful homes,” McCabe said.  Once the dogs are spayed/neutered and properly vetted with all shots, their profiles are posted on adoption websites and volunteers work tirelessly to screen applications looking for the perfect homes.”

A growing organization, Dog Star Rescue is led by a nine-member board of directors and currently has about 300 dog-loving volunteers who work together to make each rescue happen. Three of its volunteers are dog trainers who work with the dogs before and after they are adopted, as needed.

Bark & Brew will be held on October 1 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at the Thomas Hooker Brewing Company located at 16 Tobey Road, Bloomfield, Conn. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. Designated drivers will be available after the event for $10 a ride.
