COLLINSVILLE — A Burlington resident is looking to establish a used car dealership at 5 River Road in Collinsville.

Lava Motors, owned by Zolfikar Ezzeddine of Burlington, is looking to sell vehicles at the .47- acre site with a 1,300-square-foot building, which sits at the corner of a v-shaped intersection of Route 179 in Collinsville.

The application proposes 33 spaces for the used vehicles and seven additional for employee and customer parking. It also proposes two “dark sky compliant” light fixtures.

The application has been noticed for a public hearing at the next planning and zoning commission meeting, set for  7:30 p.m. at the Canton Community Center, 40 Dyer Ave., on Jan. 17, 2017. However, Neil S. Pade, the town’s director of planning and community development, said there are many items due to be heard that night and it is possible some could be postponed or continued.

This application should be denied. Constructing a 40-car used car lot at this prominent Collinsville intersection makes absolutely no sense to the long-term vision or health of Collinsville. It would interfere with our river trail and tourism, be a visual blight on the community, counter the residential surrounding uses, oppose the vision stated in our Town Plan of Conservation and Development for historic Collinsville, and cause serious traffic problems. Aside from the private profit for the individual seller, there is absolutely NO BENEFIT to this proposal. Nothing about it makes sense for Collinsville and Canton. It would even reduce our tax revenue over time because its blight would reduce our historic tourism visits and, in the long run, probably reduce the likelihood of redeveloping the Collins Company. No one wants to live in a village dominated by a used car dealership. This should be denied, hands down.

33-car application (+7 employee spots) was withdrawn. Land Use office says it received the drawl by email today, so there won’t be a public hearing on the item tonight.
