The Canton High boys basketball team survived – by inches – and advanced to the Class S state tournament quarterfinal round with a hard-fought 40-38 win over Amistad of New Haven Thursday night before a spirited atmosphere at Canton High.

Canton junior Ryan Enns scored eight of his team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter and senior Ethan Burke (nine points) made a short jumper in the lane to break a tie with 2.9 seconds left.

Burke stole the long inbound pass by Amistad and was immediately fouled. Since the Wolves were not in the penalty, Canton just had to inbound the ball at midcourt to run out the clock. But Amistad sophomore Detrei Murphy stole the ball and launched a running 50-foot shot that hit the rim as time expired.

The Warriors, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, will host No. 23 Waterbury Career Academy on Monday, March 13, with the winner advancing to the semifinals. The tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Canton girls team have advanced to the Class S semifinal and will take on Housatonic at 7 p.m. Friday night. That games takes place at Simsbury High School.
