Two Killed in Route 44 accident Saturday night

Two people are dead following a two-car vehicle on Route 44 Saturday night, police said.

Shortly before 11 p.m., Canton Emergency Dispatch received numerous 911 calls reporting a two-car accident on Route 44 near Colonial Road. Arriving emergency personnel located two significantly damaged motor vehicles involved in a traffic accident, a submitted press release stated.

Three occupants were located in one vehicle and one occupant was located in the second vehicle. Emergency medical care was initiated for the occupants of both vehicles. One person was pronounced dead at the scene and a second occupant was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the release. The other two individuals sustained serious injuries.

Identities of those involved are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The roadway remained closed early Sunday morning time for an in-depth examination of the scene, evidence collection and scene documentation by the North Central Municipal Accident Reconstruction Team, police said. Traffic is being detoured around the accident scene.

The Canton Police Department was assisted by the town of Canton Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance, Simsbury Volunteer Fire and Ambulance, Avon Volunteer Fire and Ambulance, Burlington Volunteer Fire Department. Ambulance and UConn Ambulance, police said.

Fire crews had to extricate the patients from the vehicles. For Canton volunteer fire Engine 1, Engine 4, Squad 5, Rescue 9, Car 10 (ambulance) and medic responded.

The accident remains an active and ongoing investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is urged to call the Canton Police Department at (860)693-0221.
