Special to Canton Compass

Armed with a degree in International Studies from the University of Connecticut, an extensive background in travel, and a desire to “create opportunities,” Autumn Sutherland has “built Switzerland” right here in Canton, Connecticut.

The design and lay-out, both her own creations, are educational and entertaining.  A great deal of thought and planning went into the development of the Matterhorn. It is a colorful, vibrant world that has been created, filled with music, humor, and kiosks of interesting facts sprinkled throughout the course. To play mini golf here and not to read these signs would be a mistake. There are fun facts on almost every corner. Autumn has researched everything possible about Switzerland, including famous people, animals and plants of the country, and fascinating little-known facts, so as you play golf and enjoy the beauty, sights, and sounds around you, you will also come away having learned a lot about Switzerland. And as Autumn emphasizes, the idea of playing mini golf has appeal because “all ages can play together”.  It can be competitive, but it can also be “just plain fun.” … Continue Reading

CANTON — While the grand opening for a new roastery and cafe is set for later this week, already Giv Coffee owners Emily and Jeff Brooks feel they are connecting with community.

Emily grew up in Burlington, Jeff in Farmington and some will recognize the two from the Collinsville Farmers Market or Valley Community Baptist Church.  The couple began the business approximately four years ago in Torrington but added that they’ve run into numerous friends and met several more while preparing to open their roastery and cafe at 194 Albany Turnpike (Route 44) in Canton.

“It feels a little more like home in a sense,” Jeff Brooks said of being in Canton.

The cafe will be open 6 days a week, opening from early morning to early evening Monday through Thursday and staying open later on Friday and Saturday. Coffee will be roasted right on site in a machine visible from the cafe. In addition to coffee and related drinks, teas, cold drinks and light fare will be sold. Bagged coffee will also be available for purchase and indoor and outdoor seating will be available.

Among the food to be sold will be goods baked on site, fruit, as well as regional products such as Mrs. Murphy’s Donuts and breakfast and lunch “pies” from Sixpence Pie Company. The couple plans to work with several additional food providers as time goes on.  … Continue Reading

The Dentfix Property in Collinsville is up for lease but owner Stephen Roberto says the business will continue.

While the Dentfix retail site in Collinsville is up for lease, owner Stephen Roberto said the business will continue.

“I purchased this property as an investment,” Roberto said. “My business fit nicely here while I was improving the property but our largest revenue source is high volume mobile service of Auto Dealerships. I truly enjoy working with the general public but the retail shop is far more work and is dependent on me to service it full time. I am easily working twice as hard here at the shop. My direction is to develop the business to need less of me technically. Now that I have a heathy commercial property my goal is to lease it and return to concentrating Dentfix on wholesale business. This will also allow me to spend time on other ventures I have in mind.” … Continue Reading

Geoff Mattheis hopes to open Tidal River Brewing by August.

CANTON — It might go with the territory but New Hartford’s Geoff Mattheis is taking the craft mentality to another level at Tidal River Brewing Co., the Canton business he hopes to launch by late summer.

In addition to equipment for brewing and fermenting and a host of other business needs, he and a group of volunteers are quickly adding unique touches to the 2,000-square-foot Canton facility at 15 Cheryl Drive.

For one there’s the bars, built on casters for maneuverability, where nearly every detail is hand crafted. Dr. Who fans will recognize the decoration that adorns the bathroom, one of the several “nerd chic” touches that will adorn the brewery, courtesy of his artistic wife, Mary.
