Due to the Canton Chamber’s Gifts for Canton drive, some 300 Canton residents have a brighter holiday season.

Gifts for Canton is the chamber’s annual drive for those in town struggling to make ends meet. It included collection boxes placed throughout town, fundraisers at McDonald’s, a chamber Network Nosh, two Canton Police Department Stuff the Cruiser events (at the Shoppes and Ocean State Job Lot) and more.

The annual effort culminated on Tuesday with a distribution of those gifts. That morning, a team of volunteers, including non chamber members, organized the gifts over several tables in the basement of Trinity Episcopal Church. Recipients checked in and, in small groups, got the chance to pick out some gifts and receive gift cards to help with clothing and other needs. The next day, food gift cards were also distributed.

Ann Gagnon, who started the effort in 1995 while chamber president and continues to coordinate the drive, said it was impossible to get a count all the presents and gifts cards. However, she said it was clear that the giving and volunteer efforts were exceptional this year.

“It has grown into a lovely community event with lots of organizations, businesses, and individuals helping the Canton Chamber make this possible for those in need in Canton — a true example of helping your neighbors,” she said. … Continue Reading

The owners of Tacos Dorados’ said they plan to open the restaurant’s doors on Monday, Dec. 22.

The Mexican and Italian restaurant is located at 144 Albany Turnpike, a building that has a long history of food service but until recently sat dormant after Char Koon 1800 closed its doors in May of 2012. For many years in recent history, it was the site of Margarita’s, a popular Mexican restaurant.

The new owners are leasing the building and interest in the new restaurant has been high.

“There’s a buzz,” co-owner Declan Carr said on Tuesday. “It’s just waiting for everything to fall into place.” … Continue Reading

Beer Aficionado Looks to Open Brewery in Canton

December 14, 2014 Business No Comments

TRBC-simple-logo-trans-2New Hartford resident and beer aficionado Geoff Mattheis is looking to open a “nano brewery” in Canton.

Mattheis is a beer lover who has been home brewing for the past three years. He and his wife have also been active in the state’s growing microbrew culture and are members of the CTBeerTrail.

He feels he’s found a perfect spot in an industrial zone near Route 44 to launch Tidal River Brewing Company and said a lease should be signed soon.

“The Northwest corner of the state is currently a woefully under-served market for Connecticut craft beer,” Mattheis wrote in a message to Canton Compass. “The most recent brewer’s festival at Ski Sundown in September gave me a great feeling on the pulse of the desire for those of us in this area to have a local brewery that’s easy and fresh to get to. Canton has a great demographic and cool small-town vibe that will support the feeling of a Community Brewery very well. I feel like a location right on the Route 44 corridor is perfectly situated for ease of access and availability.” … Continue Reading

Collinsville businessman Scott Cunningham believes that the fun of antiques goes well beyond collecting. In fact, more and more, he and his partners at Antiques on the Farmington, are emphasizing the practical nature of purchasing yesteryear’s items.

“You can find things made in the United States, of much higher quality than you see from new items, and in many cases, you’re buying it for less,” he said.

Antiques on the Farmington got its start in 1991 in Unionville and re-located to a portion of the old Collins Co. Factory complex in 2006 after a similar business moved to New Hartford.

Owned by Cunningham, his wife Elaine and Alan and Jeanne Berman, the business occupies an expansive two-floor space. It’s an “antiques mall,” which features more than 50 dealers that rent space.

The Cunningham’s are in the process of revamping the business web site and taking a more active role on Facebook. But the goal is to get people in the store, where they can wander through the eclectic spaces and find what appeals to them. … Continue Reading

It also gives people a chance to discover new places and see all the town offers, Taylor said.

Collinsville Photographer to Debut Gallery 526

Later this week TAB Photographic owner Tim Brown will formally introduce Gallery 526, a Collinsville space that will serve as his office, studio and gallery.

Located in the former Collins Company factory complex, Brown has revamped the approximate 800-square-foot space and worked hard to bring out its naturally rustic character.

“When I saw this space it grabbed me,” Brown said.

The studio is next to Antiques on the Farmington and due some unexplained number gaps in the area, Brown refers to its location as 20ish Depot St.

526 was the prefix of Brown’s first phone number in Deep River and it’s a number that seems to be everywhere.

“526 shows up almost daily in my life,” he said. … Continue Reading
