Images of Canton: Francesca’s Reopens its Doors

Francesca’s Wine Bar and Bistro officially reopened its doors on Wednesday, Jan. 25.

The Nadeau family, which originally opened the restaurant in the fall of 2012, reopened the doors Wednesday.

In August of 2015, the family had sold the business to a different partnership, and the doors closed in October of 2016.

However, the Nadeaus have opened the restaurant again with original owners Francesca and Don taking a more minor role and their son Jonathan, who is also executive chef, as the primary owner.

However, Francesca and Don will still be a presence at the restaurant, especially for the next year.

“I feel like we never left, like it was yesterday,” Francesca Nadeau said Wednesday evening. “It feels so natural. It’s wonderful. It really is.”

Andy Stanton has been constructing a display for the past several years, adding something new each time. In all it takes approximately four weeks to set up.

Stanton said it’s fun to decorate, entertain the kids and provide a neighborhood gathering space.

Images of Canton: Nature’s Classroom 2016

September 29, 2016 Community, Photos, Schools No Comments

By John Fitts

COLEBROOK — It’s been nearly 30 years that Canton Public Schools have sent kids back to nature.

Specifically the school district partners with the non-profit outdoor education organization Nature’s Classroom to offer sixth graders a near week-long experience. This year, some 135 students went to Camp Jewell, a sprawling paradise of more than 500 acres, complete with cabins, recreational areas, fields, a lake, hiking trails and farm animals.

While there, students participated in educational hikes, recess-like transition times, live performance skits, story times, group activities and outdoor classes that explore such areas as aquatic life, geology, biology, nature-based art, ancient skills, and haiku.

Students get to choose classes based on their interests and each incorporates elements of math, science, english, art and more.

“It’s all the disciplines we teach but it’s just in a whole different environment, with a different group of students and a different instructor,” said sixth-grade teacher Patrick Allen, who is also the district’s Nature’s Classroom Coordinator.  … Continue Reading

Images of Canton: Pooch Plunge

Photos by John Fitts

Some 30 dogs and their owners came out to enjoy the second annual Pooch Plunge at Mills Pond Park pool on Tuesday evening.

“I thought it was very successful,” said Courtney Hewett, who is recreation supervisor/aquatics director for Canton Parks and Recreation. “I’m glad the weather held out. We look forward to doing it in the future.”

The event, held one day after the pool closed residents, benefitted The Friends of Canton Dog Park, a group that is in the process of obtaining non-profit status and will begin fundraising for a dog park they are hoping to build on Commerce Drive. Approximately $300 was raised.
