The Canton Varsity Girls Lacrosse team fell 2-0 to Suffield at home Tuesday evening.

Some Cherry Brook Primary School students and staff received a safety lesson and a quick peek at the new playground on Monday and more will do so this week, leading up to the ribbon cutting next week.

The school’s Parent Teacher Organization raised the funds for the new facility and will host a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday Sept. 29 at 4:45 p.m. Rain date is the next day.

Since some site work remains PTO officials are asking everyone to stay off the playground for now. The PTO is still assessing the costs and potential ways to address the damage that was done to the poured in place rubberized surface after someone walked on it before it had time to completely dry. … Continue Reading

Ski Sundown’s ninth Brewfest on Saturday, Sept, 20, 2014 included more than 35 micro breweries, music from Poor Gordon and food by Avon Prime Meats.

A portion of the proceeds benefits the Connecticut Brewers Guild.

More than 1,300 people attended the event, which also featured several local vendors and information about the mountain’s new trail, Satan’s Stairway, set to open for 2014-2015. See more about that here… Continue Reading

The 20th Annual Sam Collins Day was held on Saturday, Sept. 20.

The event included a business expo, community organization booths, inflatables, live music, a food court, Made in Connecticut tent, Canton Historical Museum activities in Collinsville and much more.

Events were held at the Main site on Canton Springs Road and in Collinsville.

Farmington Valley Stage Company kicks off its third season Friday with Neil Simon’s Laughter on the 23rd Floor.

The play draws on Simon’s own experience as a writer for the 1950s comedy variety hour, Sid Caesar’s Show of Shows.

The play takes place over three weekends in the Canton Town Hall auditorium. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 p.m. The first two weekends will also include a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.

A Wednesday night fundraiser at Flatbread of Canton, hosted by the Suzuki Summer Playgroup, netted $700 for the Hartt School Community Division’s Fund For Access, which provides financial aid for music and dance programs.

The playground consists of local string instrumentalists who follow the famed Suzuki method and participate in several local events each year. On Tuesday, many participants and friends provided live music and the restaurant donated a portion of each pizza sale to the cause. Local businesses also donated numerous raffle items.

Filmmaker Amanda Kulkoski recently made a second visit to the future Matterhorn Mini Golf site at 10 Dyer Cemetery Road. Kulkoski, a professor at Savannah College of Art and Design, is working on “Through the Windmill,” a documentary she plans to produce for the 100th anniversary of mini golf in the United States in 2016. Driving Iris Band played the final show in the Canton Parks and Recreation Department’s Summer Concert series on Aug. 14

The Canton-based band features LeeAnn Delaney on lead vocals and guitar, Peter Hunter on lead guitar, vocals, Tony Fons on bass guitar and Mark Barca on drums and vocals.

The Canton Volunteer Fire Department Inc.’s 34th annual Lobsterfest continues with an art market, lunch, dinner and live music on Saturday. Schedule for the weekend is as follows:

  • Saturday: Dinner noon to 9:30 p.m., Art market from noon to 5 p.m. Music by Con Doty and the Life Station Earth Band (6 to 10 p.m.)
