Photos by John Fitts

Some 30 dogs and their owners came out to enjoy the second annual Pooch Plunge at Mills Pond Park pool on Tuesday evening.

“I thought it was very successful,” said Courtney Hewett, who is recreation supervisor/aquatics director for Canton Parks and Recreation. “I’m glad the weather held out. We look forward to doing it in the future.”

The event, held one day after the pool closed residents, benefitted The Friends of Canton Dog Park, a group that is in the process of obtaining non-profit status and will begin fundraising for a dog park they are hoping to build on Commerce Drive. Approximately $300 was raised.

“It’s been a great turnout and a great night,” said Chris Melite, who is co-chairing this year’s event with Richard Zommer.

COLLINSVILLE – Rootz Organic Salon debuted its new space at 124 Main St. in Collinsville on Tuesday.

The salon moved to the space after some 12 years at its old location further down Main Street.

Owner Jennifer Gero said the new space allowed her the chance to design a hair salon from scratch. On Tuesday, she was overwhelmed with gratefulness for the artists and handymen who helped design the space and the generosity of her employees and customers – several of whom came with cards, plants and the historical photo or two.

“It’s above and beyond anything I can imagine,” Gero said. “It’s truly amazing. I cried a lot this morning for the amazing kindness of people. I’m just enjoying it and taking it all in.” … Continue Reading

COLLINSVILLE — With song, poetry, chalk-written messages, illumination, words and tears, some 30 people gathered in Collinsville Monday evening and paid tribute to the victims of the Orlando Nightclub Shooting. In that incident, according to news reports, Omar Mateen killed 49 dead and wounded another 53 at a gay nightclub early Sunday.

Canton resident Rosalyn Dischiavo, founder of the Institute for Sexuality Education and Enlightenment, was at a conference for the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Councilors and Therapists when she heard the news. The conference’s theme was inclusivity. The incident is as stark reminder that the fight for equality is never a smooth one, Dischiavo said. … Continue Reading
