Musician Danny Reilert hosted the last currently scheduled open mic at the Crown and Hammer Wednesday night. Reilert has hosted the event, which recently was slated every other week, for the past three years. The restaurant is scheduled for sale and the incoming owners have told Canton Compass that no final decision has been made regarding music. The current owners will be closing at 4 p.m. on Sunday. The restaurant is slated to be sold next week and will close for a short time during the transition. See more here… Continue Reading

Video: 2014 Collinsville Halloween Parade

Thousands lined the streets for the 21st annual Collinsville Halloween Parade Saturday night.

The event is sponsored by the Collinsville Arts Initiative and supported by local businesses, donors and through the sale of long-sleeve shirts and sweatshirts ($20, $40), some of which may still be available at LaSalle Market and Village Sweet Shoppe. Checks can be made to Collinsville Arts Initiative Inc. and mailed to 13 Cliff Dr Avon, CT 06001-3413. Donations help organizers with costs such as supplies, insurance and security.

The 21st annual Collinsville Halloween Parade was held Saturday night.

Parade goers marched through the streets of downtown Collinsville under the direction of Boosolini, Monster of Ceremonies Boosolini. Numerous displays, such as Voodoo Island, flying ghosts and Dr. Feverstein’s canon were all part of the fun.

Those who would like to support the effort can shop for parade long sleeves and hoodies ($ 20 and $40) at Village Sweet Shoppe and LaSalle Market. There are also donation banks at Wilson’s Pub and LaSalle Market.

Staff, Students and Officials Formally Dedicate Multi-Use Field at Canton High

Students, town and school officials officially dedicated the track and field facility Friday morning.

Town and educational officials joined students, staff and community members Friday morning to formally dedicate the track and multi-use field at Canton High School.

High School principal Drew DiPippo said the facility not only involved a partnership between the Board of Education and other town committees and boards but also the residents of Canton.

“It was a true commitment by everyone in town,” he said.

The field itself was done late last fall but not for the fall alumni weekend and night games as many had hoped. This spring, summer and fall the final touches, including a scoreboard and bleachers, were installed.

First Selectman Richard Barlow continued on DiPippo’s theme and thanked numerous people — not only officials, board members, volunteers and voters but also a group of residents who began studying the idea several years ago.

O'Herron said that a couple of years ago, Collinsville Arts Initiative president John Squier asked him to help paint the windows. Squier still paints some scenes and, some allege, even plays the role of Boosolini, Monster of Parade Ceremonies. Canton Compass will write more about the parade as it gets closer.
