This summer’s production of The Wedding Singer marks the 56th continuous summer musical presented by Avon Summer Theater.  A talented group of over 40 students from area schools, including Farmington HS, Avon HS, Canton HS, Classical Magnet School, Miss Porter’s, Kingswood Oxford, Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts and Talcott Academy, have come together to present this fun comedy based on the hit movie and featuring 80’s-style music.

For five weeks, the group works on a summer musical, which always draws an enthusiastic audience.  Considered by many of the students to be the best part of their summer, the program not only includes evening rehearsals, but also sponsors many activities encouraging the students to form a tight community, which helps them to perform better as a company.  They watch movies, go bowling and get together after rehearsals to have a good time.  Students not only return to AST for another great summer the following year, but they form friendships which last year-round and into college, going to support each other’s school shows and other events. … Continue Reading

NEW HARTFORD/CANTON — The Farmington River is a little cleaner tonight thanks to the efforts of the Canton High School girls volleyball team.

Members of the girls team, along with a few friends, and coaches Eileen Holden and Matt Brintle, teamed up with Farmington River Tubing to enjoy a ride down the river and pick up trash on the way.

Team co-captains Rachel Falzone and Amber Harraden were on hand to lead the effort.

Harreden is certainly familiar with the river ride and trash problem as her parents run Farmington River Tubing in New Hartford, just over the Canton line. Harraden said it seemed a great activity to bring people together while doing some good.

“We’re just trying to do some team bonding before the season starts,” Amber Harraden said.

Last year, members of the Canton High football team collected enough trash to fill a bus and then some, said Jeremy Harraden, manager of Farmington River Tubing. The summer, the girls volleyball team wanted to run one.

“This seems to be a good way for the sports teams to get a free tube ride, a team bonding experience, and have some fun picking cans and stuff out of the river at the same time,” he said. … Continue Reading
