The Canton High School music department, National Honor Society and Canton Adolescents Taking Action (CATA) recently presented the 2016 Canton Cabaret at the senior center.

Festivities included performances by the Canton Jazz Ensemble, Canton Jazz Combo and Jazz workshop bands. Refreshments were also provided as students from the high school mingled with local seniors. A few even took the dance floor.

Musical performances focused on classic jazz music, particularly from the Big Band era.

Canton Girls Lacrosse Team Headed to Class S Championship

June 7, 2016 Schools, Sports No Comments

SOUTHINGTON – With a 15-11 win over number 1 ranked Old Lyme on Tuesday, the Canton Girls Lacrosse team advances to the Class S final on Saturday.

In action that took place at Southington High School, the girls started strong Tuesday evening but Old Lyme soon answered. The game remained close until the final several minutes when Canton pulled ahead and stayed there. Senior goaltender Amanda Gottlieb said a willingness to change defensive strategy was key in the win.

The girls will face Somers in the Class S final on Saturday – the day after graduation. The team has faced Somers three times this year, winning two of those decisions by a 14-4 in home games on April 15 and March 26 . On May 6 Somers, playing on its field, defeated Canton 12-11 in overtime.

Saturday’s game takes place in neutral territory – at Jonathan Law in Milford. Time is TBA.

A trip to the final is special for a group of girls that have been playing together for so many years – including six starting seniors.

“We love each other so much,” Gottlieb said. “With this team especially. It’s just like no other. I can’t believe it’s happening but it is and now we have to prepare. I’m really excited.”

Canton Girls Lacrosse Team Advances to Class S Semifinal

June 2, 2016 Schools, Sports No Comments

With a 12-6 victory over Weston on Thursday, the Canton Girls varsity lacrosse team advances to the Class S semifinal.

Fourth-ranked Canton will face number 1 seed Old Lyme on Tuesday. Time and place are to be announced.

“We’re going to have to be better than we were even today to win the semifinal game,” said coach Sean Cole. “There’s no doubt about that.”

There’s no doubt, however, that the girls are ready for the challenge and Cole knows he has some key goal scorers and a team that has continually improved its defense.

The team also learned from its game against Immaculate in first-round action earlier this week. Canton won that game 14-4 but the team felt it wasn’t at its best.

“We don’t ever want to feel that feeling ever again,” said junior Grace Giancola, who scored 9 goals on Thursday, a feat that brought her past the 100-goal mark for the season.

“All day in school I was thinking about this game,” Gioncola added. “My heart was racing. I kind of felt like I was going to throw up all day honestly. This team means so much to me.” … Continue Reading

Canton Warriors Baseball Team Advances to Second Round

May 31, 2016 Schools, Sports No Comments

With a 15-1 victory over Public Safety on Tuesday afternoon, the Canton Warriors baseball team advances to the second round of the Class S tournament.

Coach Greg Brisco said Public Safety’s starting pitcher kept the game close until he hurt his finger. The Warriors also started sparking offense once they focused on solid base hits.

“It was nice to see the guys finally stop trying to get home runs,” Brisco said. “Then we started playing well.”

16th-ranked Canton faces a tough challenge in second round action on the road Wednesday as they face number one ranked Oxford.

“We’re excited about the challenge,” Brisco said. “We’ve been able to play well against good teams and we’re hoping it continues.”

Canton Girls Tennis Team Qualifies for State Tournament

May 28, 2016 Schools, Sports No Comments

CANTON — With a 5-2 decision over Granby on Saturday morning, the Canton girls tennis team moves on to the first round of the Class S state tournament.

The match decision came down to the bitter end, coach Margaret Bristol said.

“Everybody played their hearts out and they left everything on the court,” she said. “It was a great win.”

The Canton team is 14-6 on the season and sophomore Katherine Hynes is conference singles champion.

“It’s been a wonderful season,” Bristol said. “These girls have done above and beyond what I ever expected in my first year coaching tennis.  I love working with these girls.”

The girls will face Stonington (14-0) at 1 p.m. in away action on Monday, May 30.

Canton Police: ‘Significant Amount’ of Alcohol Found at Planned Junior Prom After-Party Location

May 27, 2016 Police, Schools No Comments

Posted by John Fitts

CANTON — Acting on a tip, officers found a “significant amount of alcohol,” at a private residence where some students had planned a post-event party the night of the Canton High School Junior Prom, police chief Christopher Arciero said.

The chief said police want to alert parents to the incident and offer suggestions prior to the Senior Prom in early June.

“The Canton Police Department wants to ensure a safe and unforgettable positive experience for those attending the senior prom,” Arciero stated in a message to Compass. “What we don’t want to see is the tragic impact of an alcohol related incident involving a minor.”

“I applaud those concerned individuals who provided information about the circumstances of that party which allowed us to stop it well in advance and the subsequent support from school officials,” Arciero added.

The incident is still under investigation and police did not provide further details. … Continue Reading

Successful Writers Pass Along Advice to Canton Students

By John Fitts

For the writer, dissatisfaction with a finished piece does not have to signal failure.

Sam Adler-Bell, a successful social advocate and journalist, recently told Canton students to embrace the fact that they might be unhappy with their work. It’s a sign of growth, motivation and the desire to always do better.

“One thing I find in my writing is I almost never like it,” he said. “That’s a good sign.”

Adler-Bell is one of six writers who recently visited the Canton Middle/High School campus for the school’s first “Author Afternoon,” presented by the English Department and library media centers at the school.

In two sessions, each writer addressed students, offered some insight on their approach to writing and passed along tips on story ideas, editing, structure and inspiration. … Continue Reading

Canton Middle School Students Learn Life Lessons During Day of Service

By John Fitts (Additional photos courtesy of LaNelle Stanhope and Rebecca Stevenson)

CANTON – While May 19, 2016 might not have been the most academically challenging day at Canton Middle School, students learned some important life lessons.

On that day, 282 Canton Middle School students, along with staff members and some parents, participated in a Day of Service, during which groups of students traveled to local farms, nursery schools, nursing homes, libraries, parks and elsewhere to clear invasive species, teach kids, clean out sheds, share their company with the elderly, pick up litter, and much more – putting in a collective 1,120 hours of work.

It’s an effort the school has worked toward all year and involved an ambitious effort to coordinate 22 projects at 18 different sites in a day-long effort.

As a result, students were able to make new friends, further the school’s 2015-2016 theme of “Paying it Forward” and feel energized about giving back, school officials said.

“The students embraced it and jumped right in,” said CMS principal Pamela C. Hamad said. “There was an energy in the building when they came back.” … Continue Reading
