Late Resident’s Spirit of Giving Back Continues at Senior Center’s Winter Wonderland

By John Fitts

In addition to the festive atmosphere and social gathering aspects, the Canton Senior Center’s annual Winter Wonderland on Friday was especially meaningful for the family of late Canton resident Gary Bruce Youell.

An entrepreneur, Gary’s spirit of giving back was also so strong that Connecticut based travel company Tauck, for which he was a board member, re-dubbed time set aside for community service as a “Gary day.”

His daughter Amber is now Europe Operations Manager for Tauck River Cruising and Friday was an especially meaningful Gary day as she, four siblings, mother Trish and two grandchildren helped out at the event, singing, serving, setting up and more.

For a family spread out across the globe as far as Switzerland and Dubai it was meaningful to be together and give back at an event they discovered their parents had attended in the past.

“It just feels special to serve this community in a way that meant something to him,” Amber Youell said. … Continue Reading

On Friday, March 4, the Cherry Brook Garden Club stopped by and helped the residents of Cherry Brook Health Care Center plant spring bulbs. The residents and women from the community enjoyed each other’s company, as they planted. They also shared some laughs, reminisced, and in some cases got reacquainted with each other.

Kate Stoetzner, Director of recreation, remarked “Flower therapy has been proven to be therapeutic by helping to restore balance between mind, body and spirit. Generally, flower therapy works by tackling the emotional and mental states and can help with a range of conditions and illnesses by delighting the senses of smell, touch and sight. The residents and staff really enjoyed their time planting and interacting with the women of their community. The Canton Senior Center plans a special honor for the late Larry Soliani, who was an active Canton and Avon senior center member.

A Torrington native, Soliani was active in the Canton Senior Club, the Avon Senior Organization and was a long-time member of the Canton Commission on Aging.
