The UConn lady Huskies may have solidly won the first round contest in the NCAA women’s basketball tournament Saturday night but it was still a dream-come-true evening for St. Francis player and Canton High School graduate Sarah Benedetti.

Benedetti led her team in scoring with 13 points, include three 3-pointers.

Our friends at the Collinsville Press covered the story, which is available here.

Benedetti has received a lot of press lately and the UConn game corresponded perfectly with a trip by the Canton girls basketball team to the Class S State Championship game Saturday morning.

Canton Compass wrote about the excitement earlier last week.

Photos and video from the Class S game, which Canton lost 50-52, can be found here.

In addition to the Collinsville Press story, many media outlets covered Benedetti’s story on Saturday, including the New York Times. Read their feature here.

Images of Canton: The Road to Mohegan

Although they desperately hoped for a different outcome, hundreds of Canton students, parents and basketball fans traveled to cheer on the girls varsity squad in the Class S State Championship game at Mohegan Sun Saturday morning.

After falling behind for much of the game, the Canton girls nearly staged a historic comeback but fell short, losing to Thomaston by a score of 50-52.

The enclosed video and photos showcase some moments from the championship game and events leading up to it, including a Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference press event and luncheon on Wednesday and an early Saturday morning sendoff at Canton High School. Also included below are highlights from CPTV.

For more about the game itself, see this story from our friends at The Collinsville Press.

As Canton High School graduate Sarah Benedetti prepares for the game of her life, she won’t be able to catch the Lady Warriors as they take on Thomaston in the Class S Finals at Mohegan Sun Saturday morning. However, she’ll be there in spirit.

“It is an incredible opportunity for them, one that the Canton Girls’ Basketball program has not had in a very long time,” Benedetti said. “It is a very exciting time, and a memory that they will never forget. The girls are very deserving of the chance to play at Mohegan and regardless of the outcome, should be proud of everything they have accomplished.”

Of course, Benedetti, a 2011 CHS graduate and senior forward at St. Francis Brooklyn has just a bit of her own basketball excitement Saturday.  Her team is set to take on the UConn lady huskies in the opening round of the 2015 NCAA Division 1 tournament.

In the span of less than 12 hours, many fans of Canton girls basketball will witness two of the biggest events to ever happen for the program.

“I think Canton girls basketball at this point in time is really on the map,” said Canton Athletic Director Craig DeAngelis. He also praised the girls and the coaches for their hard work and perseverance this season.

The excitement is certainly building. On Wednesday, the current Canton Girls varsity team participated in a special Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference press conference and luncheon for the team participating in this weekend’s State Girls Basketball Tournament.

The girls traded their uniforms for heels and fine dresses, talked to the media, enjoyed lunch and expressed excitement both for their upcoming game.  and the UConn- St. Francis Brooklyn matchup as well. Junior Emma Charron also represented her team during the program.

Several of the Canton players are also going to Storrs Saturday night.

Girls Team Takes Second Place

(Submitted) Canton Youth Basketball Athletics hosted the 7th Grade Boys & Girls NCC championship playoffs the weekend of Feb. 27 to March 1.

Over the past two seasons both of these teams have finished either in 1st or 2nd place in their regular season and won the playoff championship or finished in 2nd place.

Last year the boys team finished in 2nd place in the regular season and lost to Ellington in the 6th grade NCC championship game.

This year, the boys team finished in 1st place for the NCC regular season with a 15-1 record.  They faced Glastonbury in the quarterfinals and pressed from the start, leading by 48 – 16 at halftime and cruised to a 74-48 victory.  The 4th seeded team, South Windsor, was the semi-final opponent and they too had no answer for offensive onslaught.  Canton shot 50 percent from the field, 67 percent from the line, assisted on 24 of 31 made field goals, rained down four 3-point shots and committed a season low 9 turnovers resulting in a final tally of 76-37.

With a 63-52 victory over Old Lyme on Monday night, the Canton girls head to the Class S Semifinals on Friday.

The girls started strong during the first quarter but then got into a little foul trouble and played a bit unevenly. However the team was able to retain a lead and settle down late in the game, scoring some key baskets, minimizing their turnovers and handling the ball well.

“This was not the prettiest win but it was definitely a team win in the sense that everyone had to find a way to contribute,” coach Brian Medeiros said. … Continue Reading
