Submitted — Ski Sundown will play host to a ski-a-thon on Sunday, March 8, 2015 to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Participants will ski as many runs as they can between 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Awards will be given in three age categories (5 and under, 6-12, 13+) to the person with the most runs. A “tea-cup auction” will also be held, with over $3,000 in donated items as prizes. The drawings will be held at 1:00 p.m. and you must be present to win. Registration will be held in the base lodge from 7:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. A minimum donation of $10 and a lift ticket or pass are required.

This event is being organized by Madeline Moore and Julia Redfield, both 12-year olds from East Granby.

The girls have been best friends since the age of 3, and participate in their middle school’s ski club program at Ski Sundown.

“We learned about the Make-A-Wish Foundation through our participation in ski races where event proceeds were donated to this foundation. Make-A-Wish grants wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions, and we really want to help,” said Julia Redfield. Last year, Madeline and Julia raised $225 by running hot chocolate and lemonade stands, and collecting returnable cans and bottles. … Continue Reading

In the words of coach Brian Mederios, the Canton Girls Basketball team’s loss to Bolton on Tuesday night was “disheartening.”

By a score of 47-53, the girls fell to Bolton, missing their chance to compete in the NCCC tournament final.

“I’m very disheartened with how it ended,” Mederios said.

As they have in their other two losses — and some wins — the girls started slow but kept it close. They then rallied to take the lead late in the game, only to lose traction or in this case, have several foul calls against them. With a little more than a minute remaining, Canton took the lead but Bolton forced some turnovers and drew several foul calls against Canton. Bolton didn’t miss from the foul line, putting the game out of reach.  … Continue Reading

Canton High School seniors and basketball teammates Gabby Rose and Jacquie Grabowski have shared many exciting moments on the court this year.

It’s been a mostly upbeat, winning season and on Tuesday, the girls and their teammates face Bolton in the NCCC semifinals.

Rose and Grabowski, aka the 5’7” “twin towers” have been a solid part of the team but for them basketball has a deeper meaning.

They’ve known each other since kindergarten but in third grade played basketball together in a Parks and Recreation league. It kindled a deep friendship that continues today.

“Since we’ve been playing basketball, we’ve been close,” Grabowski said. … Continue Reading

With a 58-48 win over Granby Saturday, the Canton Girls Varsity basketball team advances to the NCCC Semifinals next week.

It was a scrappy, emotional game Saturday with numerous calls, a seesaw of scoring and other ups and downs.

Video: Canton Girls Fall to Avon in Historic Matchup

February 14, 2015 Schools, Sports No Comments

Despite taking an exciting third-period lead after a slow start, the Canton Girls Varsity Squad fell 63-50 to Avon on Friday night.

Avon took an early 17-1 lead and pulled out ahead again late in the game when Canton just couldn’t keep that mid third-period momentum going.

“I give the kids credit, they battled all the way back . . . and then they ran out of steam,” said Canton coach Brian Medeiros. “I give the Avon kids credit; that’s why they’re champions. Champions die hard.” … Continue Reading
