CANTON –The Warriors softball team might have struggled on the field this season but on Monday evening the girls ended on a high note – celebrating senior players and logging a third win with a 15-4 victory over Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy.

Already a small team, the program is losing the following six seniors:

  • Samantha Anderson
  • Kelsey Beadle
  • Anna Shine
  • Megan Hall
  • Sophia Pelehach
  • Emma Plourd

On Monday, parents, coaches and teammates honored those girls with signs, gifts and speeches.

Head coach Charley Batan said he was proud of his girls for their on-field improvement over the course of the season but more importantly for their attitude.

“I’m very proud of them all. The seniors are very good academically — very, very, very good students and great kids,” he said. “It’s just been a pleasure to watch them grow up.” … Continue Reading

RBI Academy Scholarships Available in Memory of Willem van Gemeren

May 23, 2016 Community, Sports No Comments

willemCanton Little Players ages 10 to 12 have just a little more time to apply for the 2016 Willem van Gemeren Memorial Scholarship.

Niels Willem van Gemeren II, who starred for the Canton Angels, and his father, Niels Willem van Gemeren, tragically lost their lives in an August 2005 plane crash in Lyme, NH.

In memory of Will, the van Gemeren family generously offers four scholarships every year to the RBI Academy overnight baseball camp. This is an overnight camp in North Easton, Massachusetts that runs from July 17 to July 22. A one to two-page essay about the importance of representing the league and Will’s memory is required as part of the application.

The family has sent at least four players to the camp each year since 2006.

“They continue to just shower these kids with generosity and it’s something I think that’s extremely impressive and a fantastic opportunity for the kids,” said Canton Little League president Bob Barnes.

Those interested in applying or learning more about the scholarship can visit http://bit.ly/1F1lJgv and the essay must be postmarked or time stamped by June 1, 2016.
