Retiring CMS Principal Joe Scheideler Honored at Town Hall Meeting

The Student Council at Canton Middle School recently surprised retiring principal Joseph P. Scheideler by paying tribute to his career at the school’s June Town Hall meeting.

The morning included presentations of a plaque, two United States flags that flew over the Nation’s Capitol during the recent 8th-grade trip, and special posters and gifts. Students and many special guests attended the event and some made posters and banners for the occasion.  A slideshow included photos, vintage video clips, video tributes from current and past students and a JibJab e-card.

Town Electors have Chance to Accept $500,000 Grant for Improvements at Mills Pond Park

The town will host a special Town Meeting on June 25 to see if electors would like to accept the $500,000 grant for improvements at Mills Pond Park.

The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in Room F of the Canton Community Center.

Elector will consider and take action on the following question:

1.   Shall the Town of Canton, pursuant to Charter Section 9.03(I)(2), accept a Small Town Economic Assistance Program Grant in the amount of $500,000 for the purposes of making various improvements to Mills Pond Park? … Continue Reading

Survey Looks to Assess Walk- and Bike-Friendliness of Connecticut Towns

Bike Walk Connecticut is the midst of public opinion surveys on the bike- and walk-friendly status of the state’s cities and towns. The organization will publish a scorecard for each town as well as spread awareness for its complete streets program.

Million-Dollar Grant Will Fund Repair of a Portion of East Hill Road

The Capital Region Council of Governments has awarded the town $1 million to redo a portion of East Hill Road.

The money will fund the reclaiming and repaving of the road between Dowd Avenue and 100 feet north of Route 44. Work will include some minor drainage improvements, width adjustment in some areas and planned sidewalks between Route 44 and Colony Road, said Robert J. Martin, director of public works.

The town had planned to redo the portion of roadway in 2015 but the grant will allow the town to get more out of its road improvement funds, officials said.

Local Couple Looks to Give Back Through ‘Dial-A-Ride Bash,’ Set for June 12

dialaride2A fundraiser to support the town’s senior and disabled population is set to take place on Thursday, June 12.

The “Dial-A-Ride” bash is set for 6 to 10 p.m. at La Trattoria in Canton and will feature a silent auction, buffet dinner, cash bar and live music*.

The event, which is not a town function, is being organized by Victoria Snow Arel and Larry Arel as a way to give back to the community. Proceeds will be donated to the town, Victoria Snow Arel said. … Continue Reading

Canton Hikes Included in Connecticut Trails Day Weekend Events

Two June 8 hikes in Canton are part of the Connecticut Trails Day Weekend festivities.

The first is from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Mary Conklin Santuary, 144 Indian Hill Road, and will be led by Dr. Sarah Faulkner.

Secondly will be a 1 to 3 p.m. jaunt at the Sun, Wind and Woodland Trail, 200 Breezy Hill Road, to Capen Cabin. Led by Jennifer Mason, young people are especially encouraged to join this hike.

Both hikes are sponsored by the Canton Land Conservation Trust.
