This Saturday, approximately a half dozen members of the Canton High School jazz ensemble will be on the spot as they sit in with the The Funky Dawgz Brass Band.

The students won’t have a chance to rehearse with the band this week, study the charts or know exactly what or how long they’re playing.

“They’ll work that out right before they play — in the true spirit of improvisation,” said John Mastroianni, Canton’s K-12 Music Department Supervisor, high school band leader and teacher.

Presented by Canton Parents for Music, The Funky Dawgz Brass Band will play in the Canton High School auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday Jan. 9.

Created out of the University of Connecticut music scene, the 10-piece Funky Dawgz play a variety of New Orleans rythym and blues, their own originals and contemporary music.

“They’ve kind of been going viral so to speak,” Mastroianni said. “They’re getting pretty well known and they’re a lot of fun to watch and hear.”

The show ends up being the first in a 2015-2016 music series. Originally slated to appear in October, the Jeff Holmes Band has been rescheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 24.

“It’s nice to have them interact with the guest musicians,” said Mastroianni.

Tickets for The Funky Dawgz Brass Band can be purchased at the door, the high school office or via http://cpmfunkydawgz2016.eventzilla.net/web/event?eventid=2138843202. Prices are $15 for students and seniors and $20 for adults. At the show, patrons can also pay $35 ($25 for students and seniors) to see both the Funky Dawgz and The Jeff Holmes Band.

Proceeds benefit Canton Parents for Music, a group that funds initiatives such as ensemble accompanists, workshops and artist in residence programs.
