Through a multi-faceted approach of storytelling, visual and performing art, and ascetic disciplines Kristen Larson hopes that the Untold Stories Project can help people heal and build a sense of community.

Featuring many local residents, the second annual Untold Stories Project is set to take place over the next four days in Hartford. Larson, of East Granby, organized a similar 9-day event last January.

“We’re hoping to have it every year and hopefully bring people out to connect,” Larson said.

The events this year, set for Friday, Feb. 25-28, 2016, will include a combination of live music, vocal workshops, storytelling, open mics, drumming circles, yoga, meditation and more.

In addition to the live events, Larson is working with people to record stories for a podcast, documentary and book. Based on the stories, she also plans to create themed community projects around issues such as physical abuse, addiction and mental illness.

Larson said she got the idea after attending a music festival a few years ago. The event lacked social activism and many there were at risk. Larson and a few of her friends began talking to people at campsites about rape awareness and other issues.

“It was really deep and inspiring,” she said, adding that she thought on the ride home, “I want to create space for people to tell their stories.”

From there, Larson began organizing and found willing partners in places like Tovio, a mind/body wellness center in Hartford. A musician herself, Larson also found that many local bands were also willing to participate.

Those involved in the project are donating their time and there is no cost for admission. Donations will be accepted and people can give what they can.

Venues include:

  • Thursday: Feb 25th, 6:30-10:30pm @ ReSet, 1429 Park St. Suite 114 Hartford
