COLLINSVILLE, Conn. — The Sebastians, a dynamic ensemble specializing in Baroque and classical music, will perform “Over the Alps” on Sunday, April 10, at 4 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Collinsville. The concert is part of the Shepherd Music Series sponsored by the Maxwell Shepherd Memorial Arts Fund.

The Baroque style of art, music and architecture flourished in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. However, due to the formidable barrier of the Alps that separated Italy from the Austro-German regions to the north, communications, travel and cultural exchanges between the countries on either side were limited.

The Sebastians will perform vocal and instrumental works that trace the evolution of Baroque music, Italian style, as it migrated over the Alps to the German and Austrian masters of the era.

“Over the Alps” features soprano, piccolo violin, Baroque cello, harpsichord and theobro. Vocal pieces by Handel, Bononcini and Buxtehude will complement instrumental works by Bach, Vivaldi, Corelli and Biber. The concert is free and open to the public.

Lauded as “everywhere sharp-edged and engaging” (The New York Times), The Sebastians have also been praised for their “well-thought-out articulation and phrasing” (Early Music Review) and “elegant string playing … immaculate in tuning and balance” (Early Music Today).

For the last four years, The Sebastians have been ensemble in residence at All Angeles’ Church in New York City and they are artists in residence with the Maxwell Shepherd Fund for 2016-2017. Touring engagements for the current season include concerts in Miami, Washington D.C., New York and Philadelphia.

The Maxwell Shepherd Memorial Arts Fund is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the fine and performing arts. All funding comes from donations by supporters and patrons. Tax-deductible donations, including employer matching gifts, may be made at the concert or sent to MSMAF, Inc., c/o Collinsville Savings Society, P.O. Box 197, Collinsville, CT 06019.
