Tidal River Brewing Opens Its Doors in Canton

January 8, 2016 Business, Community, Photos No Comments

By John Fitts

CANTON – It was billed as the “softest of openings” but business was steady at Tidal River Brewing Co. on Friday night.

“It’s encouraging,” said owner Geoff Mattheis, adding that he was grateful that so many were purchasing beer in 32 and 64 oz. growlers.

It was nearly a year ago that Mattheis received approval from the town of Canton to open in a 2,000 square-foot facility at 15 Cheryl Drive.

He had originally hoped to open the doors much sooner and even now has a “provisional” license from the state. While that doesn’t allow to distribute, Mattheis can sell directly at the facility.

“It’s a huge relief just to be able to have the community in here,” Mattheis said. … Continue Reading

Portraits of Canton: Poet Veda Leone

Veda Leone

By John Fitts

Spoken word poetry is giving Veda Leone the voice she always sought.

“It’s vulnerability,” she said. “It’s just an opening of the deepest parts of someone. They’re sharing it in a way that just leaves you stunned or breathless or crying. I think the healing power of writing is something I didn’t quite understand until this past year.”

While she discovered the art form a few years earlier, she was further enthralled by an “Evening of the Spoken Word” at the Gallery on the Green in the spring of 2014. Readers included some of her future friends and mentors – Chivas Sandage, Nora Jamieson and Jackie Welsh.

Soon, Leone was residing in the village, drawing inspiration from “the artists, writers, teachers and free spirits in Collinsville” and by January of 2015 was attending Sandage’s “Write Like a River” workshops.

In July, Leone began attending weekly poetry open mics in Northampton, Mass. … Continue Reading

Images of Canton: A Night of Fine Music in Collinsville

There was no shortage of talented musicians in Collinsville on Wednesday night. At Downright music and Art, Canton native and guitarist Jackson FitzGerald came from Brooklyn with fellow guitarist Mike Bono in tow. The two provided an evening of jazz guitar as many old friends and musical fans gathered to listen.

FitzGerald graduated from Canton High in 2010 and Berklee four years later. Bono graduated from Berklee in 2013. Both are living in Brooklyn working as freelance musicians.

After the two were done, members of the 2007 CHS Jazz combo held an impromptu jam.

At Wilson’s Pub, the mood was a bit more southern and bluesy with a band led by Dallas-area based guitarist Brian Calway, known as “Hash Brown.” A 32-year music veteran, Brown played all over the east coast before moving to the Dallas area in the 1980s.
