God might work in mysterious ways but Karen Cook’s journey back to the church was also a bit unusual.

One Sunday morning more than 20 years ago, while working as an associate General Manager at Long Wharf Theater in New Haven, she was some friends when one asked her to join a handbell choir.

“I was standing in a stream, on a Sunday morning with a beer in one hand, fishing pole in the other,” said Cook, who came to North Canton United Methodist Church earlier this summer. “I started singing the alto part to The Church’s One Foundation and realized how stupid that sounded and then my colleague said, ‘hey you want to come back to church? We have a great choir; we need you to play.”

At Branford United Methodist Church she found a welcoming community, full of faith, liturgical variety, a lay-driven atmosphere and even a guest sermon on hymns, including, of course, The Church’s One Foundation.

It was all very different from the strict Missouri Synod Lutheran church atmosphere of her youth.

“I left the church at 17, much to my parent’s dismay, broke their heart and didn’t return until I was 37,” she said. “I came back through love of music.”

Cook was drawn to the openness of the United Methodist Church.

“We have a very open table,” said Cook. “Anybody, unbaptized, non-believing in the moment, we hope that there’s some kind of conversion that happens. That was very attractive. That and the liturgy is different every week.” … Continue Reading
